About the Artist

Jazz Percussionist Byung Kang is an in-demand drummer, educator, and session player in the DMV area. His experience studying and performing with Gary Thomas, Nasar Abadey, Blake Meister, Paul Bollenback, and Alex Norris have shaped his unique sound of both traditional and modern drumming. His approach on music and the drum-set has been evolving since high school and contimres to evolve. He performs in many styles including jazz, funk, soul and gospel. Some of Byung's performances include two live albums with Saxophone legend Gary Thomas -- Pøriah's Pariahs (2016) and The Divide (2017), NPR live recording at D.C JazzFestival with Gary Thomas Trio (2015), and Kennedy Center appearances with Boys and Girls Club of Washington D.C (2014) and with All County High School Jazz Ensemble (2010). Byung took part inrecordings with musicians Leo Maxey's Think About These Things (201 6), Morris Wilson's Morris lhilson Jazzin': Part I (2016) and Todd & Shawn Simon's Simqn Brothers Holiday Special: Vot 2&3 (2015). Byung has also toured with a non-profit Christian group for 4 years, performing in 34 states , Canada and South Korea. A graduate of Peabody Conservatory, acquiring both Bachelor's Degree (2014) and Graduate Performance Diploma (2016) under full scholarship, Byung maintains a busy teaching schedule with approximately 20 students in Maryland and Virginia when not performing or on the road. He also has experience teaching at camps such as Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington (2014) and ODPC Band Academy (2015-present). He maintains an active performing schedule at various venues and as time allows he shares his experiences with his students.
