I love drawing and painting everything, landscapes, still life, portraits of people and animals. I love exploring the abstract concepts within realism. Looking for the basic shapes and letting the brush marks capture the moment is what creates the feeling of a scene. I want to capture wonderful landscapes before they are gone. Working in Plein air has taught me to simplify, see what is important and do it with passion. This is an adventure that I want to share through my art.

About the Artist

Ellie has 20 years experience as an artist. A member of Harford Artists' Association & Arts by the Bay Gallery - Havre de Grace, MD. Portrait Commissions in Pastel and Oil portraits of children, family pets and adults accepted. She has won commendations and certifications of appreciation for contributions from the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. Ellie has a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MAT in teaching from GWU

Artist's Statement

I see art as an expression of the miracles that surround us. Every day, people get into cars and are so intent on getting to where ever that they fail to see the sunset, the beauty of the new snow fall or baby goslings. Portraiture is capturing a moment in the time of a loved one, be it a spouse, child, parents, or pet.  Capturing a moment in time through Plein Air is telling the story of the world around us.

Lirodendron is a historic house in Harford County and its rear porch is festooned in flowering urns
I was commissioned to paint an updated barn on this property and saw the old manor house that is deteriorating. It tells a story of a time past when many of the wealthy had summer homes in Harford County. I want to go back again and paint a different view, though it is in dis-repair it still stands with dignity.
This is one of a series of paintings on Maryland waterways. The Bynum runs from the Fallston to the Bush River. As with all waterways construction, and pollution has created storm-water issues. Harford County was not immune to the overflowing runs that flooded roads making travel dangerous and in many cases impassable. DNR working with Harford County is working to remediate many of these waterways. The Bynum is one of many. This remediation is also helping to bring back Redwing Blackbirds, Blue Herons, fish, and wildlife to these areas creating mini-preserves. I contacted the Chesapeake Bay Foundation that for every waterway painting sold, I would be giving them a donation.

Oil painting workshops.
Ellie is available for one and two-day oil painting workshops focusing on working en Plein Air. Participants need to understand that they will be working outside, need to dress appropriately for the weather, and have art equipment for outdoor painting.
