About the Artist
Holly Morse-Ellington is a published essayist and playwright. Her nonfiction has appeared in The Pulse, Broad River Review, Baltimore Style, Baltimore's City Paper, Wanderlust and Lipstick, Matador Network, Three Quarter Review, Baltimore Fishbowl, Outside In Literary & Travel Magazine,"Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore," Urbanite,The Journal of Homeland Security, and The Washington Times, among others. Anthologies include Whereabouts: Stepping Out Of Place and Freshly Squeezed: A "Write Here, Write Now" Anthology She studied nonfiction writing at Johns Hopkins University and participated in an immersive travel writing workshop in Cuba led by Creative Nonfiction founding editor, Lee Gutkind.
As an emerging playwright, Holly has written scripts and original music for the productions. Her one act play, Exiting A Man's Cave, was published in The Furious Gazelle. Fifty Miles Away, co- written with Jason Tinney, won the 2015 Frostburg Center for Literary Arts One-Act Festival. Fifty Miles Away received full productions by Frostburg State University's Department of Theatre and Dance in 2015 and by Potomac Playmakers in 2016. Holly was cast as the female lead in the Potomac Playmakers' production. She is also the producer of the soundtrack for Fifty Miles Away, recorded and engineered by Loud And Clear Studios. Holly also wrote the music and co-wrote the script for Girl With Diamonds In Her Eyes: A Cowgirl Musical produced by Pumpkin Theatre. She was the musical director for the production and is currently a company member of Pumpkin Theatre. Holly was a featured storyteller for The Stoop Storytelling Series at Baltimore's Center Stage.
Holly is also an editor for The Baltimore Review, which received the honor of having two of its contributors win the 2018 PEN America Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She served as a board member for CityLit Project and as the state Vice President of the Maryland Writers' Association (MWA) from 2014-2016. As Vice President of the MWA, Holly partnered with Apprentice House Press to publish MWA contest winners, resulting inThe Last Government Girl and Synergy: A Collage of Voices.
Her future plans include assisting Baltimore’s Pumpkin Theatre with launching its next season and contributing to performances and workshops that bring children's theater into schools. She has also been invited to be a visiting writer for Deep Roots: Oklahoma Authors Oral History Project sponsored by the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at OSU. Holly is honored and grateful to have received an Individual Artist Award in Playwriting from the Maryland State Arts Council. She looks forward to continuing writing and collaborating with Maryland theaters to further develop her career as a playwright.
