About the Artist

My name is Janice Horoschak and I have been creating art for over 30 years. I am a second generation American with lineage from Ireland, Lithuania, Urkraine, and Poland. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1999, where I majored in General Fine Arts and Art Education. I attended Walden University and earned my Master of Science in Instructional Design and Technology degree in 2013. I am an Instructional Designer for the Maryland State Higher Education System and I set aside time to practice artful thinking and physical creation of artwork. I am passionate and consider myself a lifelong learner, not limiting myself to any subject or topic. My pursuit for art and being creative stems back from very fond memories with my sister. She was creative and always had something new for me to explore. As I grew older and more independent, I searched for other ways to quench my creative thirst. Also, as a child my family would do many things outdoors like gardening, camping, fishing, and swimming. These experiences have continued to attract me to nature as an adult with ethereal forces. My creations echo the impressions and experiences that have impacted my life. Somehow the materials and objects revive that sense of nostalgic internal peace and hope to capture that visceral presence. -Janice Horoschak www.abstractcouture.com

Artist's Statement

I enjoy the freedom to use all types of mediums to construct my art. My work consists of very simple subject matter but the process to create each representation is very complex and meticulous. If I had to choose one or two elements of art, they would be line and texture. Similarly, nature can be very simple to the naked eye yet, an abundance of underlying components are required for creation and completion of processes. I see my work as a self-portrait and how life affects me within my journey. As nature also collides with other elements, it forms alliances, and creates a harmony of coexistence or ceases to exist. Morgan Freeman's character, Red states in the movie The Shawshank Redemption, "Geology is the study of time and pressure. That's all it takes, really. Pressure and time." That is truly what life is about, how moments impact you, your endurance, the internal change that happens within you forever, and in my case how it exudes out of me in my art. Yet another quote, that emphasizes this idea metaphorically from the political scientist, Henry Kissinger, "A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure." My most apparent inspiration is American Modernist, Georgia O’Keeffe, with her close-ups of flowers and natural objects. The French Impressionists Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne also have influenced my work. -Janice www.abstractcouture.com www.marketeducatedesign.com
