About the Artist

I have always thought of myself as an artist. When I was very, very young the definition of being an artist was described to me as someone who looks for beauty, finds beauty and creates beauty. I believe it is the ability to see the beauty in even the most grotesque, the most angry as well as the most lovely that makes one an artist. I was fortunate from an early age to have teachers in my life to guide my way, instill both the desire to create and the determination and work ethic to realize my vision. As a teacher myself, I strive to help my students learn to "see" first and work on the techniques later. My favorites include O'Keeffe, Hokusai, Joyce Tenneson, Annie Liebovitz, Paul Jenkins, Monet, and of course Calder. Painting, on canvas, paper or other surfaces is always the ultimate joy and most profound struggle. Often it is music I see as color and shape evolving on the canvas. This is the most creative process, where flow most naturally occurs. I knew when I purchased my first SLR, a Canon TLB in 1973 that photography would be a major focus of my artist view. Creating a photograph always gives me joy, even when the result may end in the recycling bin. I believe in the concept that the lens captures the truth of the moment All of my works are framed by how I perceive a particular vision realized. Which translates to any given work in realism, portraiture, or the distortion of existing images or materials being reworked into fantasy colors and shapes to find another image within.

Artist's Statement

My vision as an artist is never limited by medium or technique. With more than 35 years training and experience I have worked in almost all of the visual arts, from photography to large abstract oils on canvas. The works I create tend to find the appropriate medium for expression. My goal always is to translate perceived beauty to another level, and on the way to examine and explore all that beauty’s aspects.
