Mary Morris

About the Artist

Mary Morris has been drawing, painting, and creating art since childhood. She found peace spending time outside exploring the beauty of God’s creation. Mary was born and raised in Georgia. Being the daughter of a Veterinarian, she naturally loved and respected all creatures; great and small. She jumped at every chance to assist her father in treating, administering meds to and collecting data from the animals at the Vet School. Mary studied Fine Art, Art History and Graphic Design throughout her education. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from the Corcoran School of Art in 1992. While raising two precious children, she opened her Stationery business, Magpie Designs. From 2005 ~2017, she designed invitations, cards and stationery using her original watercolor paintings. Mary studied Oil Painting at The Yellow Barn, The Kentlands, The Arts Barn and The Compass Atelier for 8 years. She is currently in The 3 year Master Artist Program at The Compass Atelier in Rockville, Maryland under the instruction of Artist and Teacher Glen Kessler. After completing the program, she will continue to paint, show, exhibit, and commission her Original Oil paintings.   Education Corcoran School of Art & Design, Washington, DC, Bachelor of Graphic Design Mount Vernon College, Washington, DC, Fine Arts Program 1986-1989   Post Graduate Coursework Oil Painting, Arts Barn, Gaithersburg, Maryland 2009-2013 Oil and Color Theory, The Yellow Barn, Glen Echo, Maryland 2013-2014 Painting through the lens, Glen Kessler Art & Teaching, Rockville, Maryland 2013-2016 Master Artist Program, The Compass Atelier, Rockville, Maryland 2017-2020   Exhibitions 2019  Paint the Town Labor Day Show, Kensington Town Hall, Kensington, Maryland 2019  Artists & Makers Gallery Show, Artists & Makers Gallery, Rockville, Maryland 2019  Rockville Arts League Juried Members’ Exhibit, Glenview Mansion, Rockville, Maryland 2019  Animal Farm Exhibition, Martha Spak Gallery at the Wharf,  Washington, DC 2019  6th Annual South-Atlantic Juried Exhibition, Montpelier Center for Arts, Montpelier, Virginia 2019  Small Works Show, Gallery North, Edmonds,Washington 2018  Reflections: An Open Juried show, Bowie City Hall, Bowie, Maryland 2018  Of A Feather…Birds in Art, The AnneMarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, Solomons Island, Maryland 2017  Fur, Feathers & Fins: Our Faithful Pets, The AnneMarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center,            Solomons Island, Maryland 2017  12x12 Exhibition & Auction, The Compass Atelier, Rockville, Maryland 2017  MAA Member Show: Spring at Brookside Gardens, Brookside Gardens, Wheaton, Maryland 2017  The Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase 42nd Annual Community Art Show and Sale            Chevy Chase, Maryland 2017  Spring Emergence Exhibition, New Masters Art Gallery, Rockville, Maryland 2017  Spectacular Skies, AnneMarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, Solomons Island, Maryland 2016  46the Annual Labor Day Art Show, Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, Maryland 2016  MAA Kensington: “Paint the Town” Labor Day Art Show, The Kensington Armory,            Kensington, Maryland 2016 New Masters Art Gallery Opening Show, Rockville, Maryland 2016 Amici Miei Restaurant and Bar Exhibition, Potomac, Maryland 2016 Artomatic, Park Potomac, Potomac, Maryland 2015 Shades of Summer, The Compass Atelier, Rockville, Maryland 2015 Three paintings featured on Vineyard Colors, Martha’s Vineyard Facebook page 2014 Rising Tide, Washington Artworks Gallery, Rockville, Maryland 2014 The Women’s Club of Potomac Art Show & Sale, P.U.M. Artist's Statement

As an artist, I am particularly drawn to animals and nature. The beauty and wonder of God’s creation is a great source of inspiration to me. I paint in oils. Through my painting, I strive to evoke a feeling, memory or a picture into the mind. Most of my work illustrates the brevity of life and the importance of fully appreciating the moments of today.
