Michael Sweet has been a pointillist painter for over 35 years. His art was inspired by a vision of a vortex, a swirl of glimmering particles, paradigmatic of the universes. Pointillism is the only technique that exemplifies his vision, both perceptibly and metaphysically. He composes his works in various genres, from landscapes to abstracts, blends of the two, or poetic notions. Every piece tells its own story. His creativity and vision are unmatched by anyone else in today's art world.
About the Artist
Michael Sweet is a Harford County, Maryland fine artist residing in Havre de Grace. He is a self- taught, outsider artist, painting exclusively in pointillism, which began as doodles in the margins of college notebooks. He began painting 35 years ago after earning his Master’s Degree in Computer Science, focusing his compositions on vortices and spheres. In 1992, after painting for several years, he enjoyed a two year stint living in Africa. The Swahili culture and savannah landscapes sent his work in new directions. After his return he moved to New England. He had his first show at Gertrude & Alice’s, the cynosure of an artists’ community in Collinsville, Connecticut. From there he began showing at regional galleries. Now living at the top of the Chesapeake Bay, his paintings have moved on to loose blending of landscape and abstract. His growth continues.Featured Work

Fading Forest

Inspiration is often gleaned from other artists. Such is the case with this painting, and the artists are the Liriodendron Group who gather ever Wednesday afternoon. Exposure to these talented individuals has resulted in a looser, freer star which I am eagerly exploring, while concentrating on color and composition.

Second Flight

There is something about our avian cousins that continually draw me, at least if you look at my body of work and see how many have birds in them. The title of this painting comes from its inspiration, an unusual inspiration for me in that it’s a painting I did 7 years ago, titled “First Flight”

Solstice
Acrylic on Canvas

A winter storm scene, a theme that is becoming one of my favorite to paint. Living south of the Mason-Dixon pretty much means I generally don’t experience winter storms such as these. But I grew up as a Yankee and lived most of life where winter scenes such as this are common. I am reluctant to say that I miss them, but there is something special about hunkering down in a severe snowstorm.

Innocence (of Józef Rippl-Rónai)
Acrylic on Canvas
2021
This painting is an interpretation of “A Park at Night” by Józef Ripple-Rónai. Innocence refers to the historical moment when he painted it, the very end of the 19th century. In our time, change is swift, and so much of the past is forgotten.
