About the Artist

Sally Miller is a Baltimore based artist whose primary work is training resident spiritual care practitioners at The Johns Hopkins Academic Medical Center. Her art, gifted to patients and chaplain residents alike, has been featured in local coffee shops and in a handul of exhibits in Baltimore: one in Fells Point, another in the Bromo Arts District, and others beyond Baltimore borders.  Each of Sally's pieces features Asemic writing and vibrant, abstract watercolors. Her art is a way of processing the loss and pain that comes with work as a hospital chaplain educator. The pieces in her exhibits are inspired by people she meets in the hospital, and two losses in her own life. Miller has come to believe that there's an inexorable connection between pain and beauty. She is fascinated by a new field, neuroaesthetics, that posits that making and beholding art is healing. That's why Miller makes art and encourages her residents, and the patients they serve, to do likewise.  Sally teaches classes in watercolor and Asemic writing to community groups. Her workshops encourage people to express ineffable feelings through color, shape, and scribbles. If you're interested in seeing her artwork, you'll find Miller on Instagram @SallyMillerAsemicArts.
