About the Artist
Sara Pearson, co-artistic director of PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER since 1987 and associate professor at the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland since 2009, has been creating and presenting "appealingly subversive, engaging, wry, and deeply affecting work" (The Washington Post) for the stage and alternative sites throughout the U.S., Europe, Latin America, Asia, and New Zealand. She is the recipient of a 2013 Dance Metro DC Award and a 1990 American Choreographer Award.
In New York City, her work has been produced by Lincoln Center, City Center Fall for Dance, Central Park SummerStage, the Joyce Theater, DTW, the Kitchen, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, P.S. l22 and Dancing in the Streets, among many others. Financial supporters include the National Endowment for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, U.S. Artists International/MidAtlantic Arts Foundation, American Dance Abroad, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Performance Network, the Rockefeller, Altria, Harkness, Jerome, Mertz-Gilmore, Lowenstein, O'Donnell-Green, Puffin and Sequoia Foundations, the American Music Center, the Asian Cultural Council, and the University of Maryland.
Recent and upcoming engagements include the commission of site-specific works at the Openlook Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia and with the Folkwang Tanzstudio in Essen, Germany; a collaboration with Compañia Rosario Cardenas in Havana, Cuba; residencies at the Bates Dance Festival and at Beamstow; an exchange with École des Sables in Senegal; and performances at DanceNOW @ Joe's Pub in New York City and Dance Place in Washington, DC.
