About the Artist

Stacey R. Salazar makes drawings, paintings, and artist books based on the relationships, language, and experiences of an everyman and everywoman. By combining personal observations and sensations with gestures of transformation, symbols of power, and compositional traditions borrowed from Renaissance and Baroque portraiture, Salazar imagines a mysterious potency in the contemporary everyday. In addition, Salazar directs the Master of Arts in Art Education program, a low-residency and online graduate program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, which integrates artmaking, teaching, and research practices for art educators seeking professional growth. Having taught studio art in a high school, community college, university, small liberal arts college, and art school, it is perhaps not surprising that Salazar's scholarly research focuses on teaching and learning in studio art at the secondary and postsecondary levels. This research is published in Sutdies in Art Education, Visual Arts Research, and Art Education Journal, as well as in severeal book chapters. She regularly presents at national art education conferences, conducts professional development workshops in schools and communities, and serves as a curriculum development consultant. Recently, Salazar was invited to speak about studio pedagogy at the Perspectives on Art Education symposium at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. She holds a Doctorate of Education in Art and Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College, a Masters of Arts in Teaching from MICA, an MFA in Painting from Towson University, and a Bachelors of Arts in Fine Arts & Art History from Randolph-Macon College. Salazar is the recipient of the 2013 MICA Trustee Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and the 2015 Manuel Barkan Memorial Award, honoring research that deals "carefully and imaginatively with an important issue in art education."
