Thiang Uk is a painter currently based in Baltimore, MD. Uk received his M.F.A. in the LeRoy E.
Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and his B.F.A. at
Hunter College in NYC in 2017. Thiang participated in residency at Skowhegan Residency in
Maine in 2023. He had so far exhibited his works in Daytona and Orlando Florida, Virginia, D.C,
New York City, and Baltimore.
His painting practice is informed by his experiences as an immigrate with multiple cultural
influences, mythologies and the sensation of human conditions through the formal endeavor of
oil painting. Born in Politically unstable Myanmar in 1993, his family, like many Burmese
diaspora stories, migrated to the United States in 2004 through his father asylum to find
prosperity and safety from potential violence and instability from the country’s own
government. Uk’s paintings manifest these manifold identities as well as metamorphosis and
the ever-shifting landscapes that evoke spiritualism, mystery and interiority.
