Artist's Statement
My paintings serve as an investigation of the “lenses” both existential and physical through which we experience landscape. I have sought to communicate the time and place of landscapes in which I find myself. In an effort to capture the “spirit” of a place I find it important to make a holistic study of all that comprises its visual essence. This means taking into account and merging material, image, and style into one clear distillation that can serve as a reified surrogate of a specific time and place.
All my work begins with drawing. I pay close attention to the communicative capabilities of a limited line. Stylistically, I derive inspiration from advertisements, cartoons, logos, architecture, signs, etc. I draw in pen from images I cull from my own iPhone photos, Google Earth, memory and life. These are a few of the “lenses” through which we experience the world and I wish to investigate how these “lenses” affect our perception of geographic locations and cultural monuments.
