Bridging agrarian heritage with contemporary abstract aesthetics through the fusion of Maryland tobacco leaves and ancient Eastern Xuan paper.
About the Artist
Yanhui Kuang (Qiu Yun) is a Maryland-based polycultural artist and the founder of Loongdao Art Studio. Moving beyond traditional boundaries, her current practice explores the 'materiality of history' through her proprietary 'Triple-Infusion' technique. She is a multi-award winner, including the 2nd Place in the 2022 Water Cube Cup International Painting Competition and the 2018 St. Mary’s County Arts Council Art Walk.Artist's Statement
My practice is defined by the 'Triple-Infusion' technique, a proprietary method designed to 'awaken' organic fibers. By infusing cured tobacco veins with organic oils and merging them with Xuan paper, I transform opaque materials into translucent canvases. This process, showcased in series like 'The First Kiss' and 'Nature’s Symphony,' creates a visual metaphor for resilience and rebirth, blending the earthy scent of the South with the spiritual essence of the East.Featured Work

The wedding of the River God
Oil on canvas
2022
An ancient custom of sacrificing a young beautiful girl to be the wife of the river god. Although this is an ancient fairy tale, I only express the boundless and limitless of modern art by depicting a happy scene of a weeding. The face of groom shows the neutral beauty that people like today, while the bride is completely under the mask.

Formless
Oil on Canvas
2025
This translation draws from the classic English rendering of phrase "The loudest sound seems silent; the greatest form appears formless" from Chapter 41 of Lao Tau"s Tao Te Ching. It employs a paradoxical expression to precisely convey the original Chinese meaning: the greatest image actually transcends physical form.
