B&O Railroad Museum, Inc.

About this Organization

The B&O Railroad Museum is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate dedicated to the preservation of the physical legacy and the experience of American railroading as well as the interpretation of its history and social, cultural, and economic impacts on American life to the widest possible audience. While perceived as a history museum, we are equally as much an art museum using multiple media to interpret our collections. With the oldest and most comprehensive collection of railroad history in the Western Hemisphere, original shop buildings, and surviving tracks at the historic Mount Clare site, we are the largest private history museum in Maryland. Located on 40 acres in a National Heritage Area, the Museum proudly serves as an economic anchor for Southwest Baltimore, Mount Clare, and Pigtown Main Street. While we are not a community center, we are striving to be at the center of our community supporting local businesses, showcasing local artists, and providing educational opportunities for neighboring schools.
