Imagination Stage - Theater for the Very Young

Imagination Stage empowers all young people to discover their voice and identity through performing arts education and professional theatre.

About this Organization

Imagination Stage envisions a future where theatre experiences are a fundamental aspect of children’s lives, nourishing their creative spirit, inspiring them to embrace the complexity and diversity of their world, and helping them overcome their challenges with hope, courage and, above all, creativity. Our programs, which typically take place at our main facility on Auburn Avenue in Bethesda, MD and at schools and other locations throughout Montgomery County, include productions of high artistic quality that are aligned with developmental milestones for children ages 1-5 as well as curriculum goals for older youth. Imagination Stage seeks to create an inclusive and welcoming environment and equitable access to all artistic and educational programming for students, staff, and visitors of all abilities. We offer inclusion supports for children to participate in educational programming alongside typically developing children, as well as programs that are designed specifically for young people with disabilities. We also provide sensory-friendly performances, ASL-interpreted performances, large-print programs, and more.

Services/Opportunities

Two adventurous mice are ready to explore the world beyond their tiny mouse-hole. They decide to go to the moon, since it is cat-free and made entirely of delicious cheese, or so they've heard. In this multi-sensory experience, children receive a small suitcase of props with which they help the actors tell the story.

It's bedtime, and two children use their imaginations to turn their room inside out. While playing dress-up, a glove becomes a fantastical creature, and a sock dance rocks the closet!

This provoking story about an immigrant family is a timely piece for children in grades 5-8.  After moving from the fictional “Homeland” to America, the central character, Nick, hopes to make new friends in his new school.  Those hopes vanish after his classmates make fun of his clothes, lunch, and his confusion about almost everything. Worst of all, Nick doesn’t speak the language. But with a clever twist, New Kid immediately puts us into Nick’s shoes by having him speak English and the other characters an unintelligible gibberish. You can imagine the perspective this would give your students on bullying, immigration, and change.

Imagination Stage's Theater for Young Audiences Productions are recommended for school groups, community centers, and public performance spaces primarily serving audiences from one to four year olds. Performances can accommodate groups of up to fifty children plus their caregivers to a max audience size of one hundred. Audiences are often asked to sit in a large circle on the ground of the performance space in a three quarter position ensuring all participants have an unobstructed view of the playing space. These shows are interactive, immersive, experiences where every child actively engages in multiple parts of the production.

Booking inquires can be made through our Assistant Producer using the contact info above.

All of our TVY programming requires a 20x20 ft. space. Sound and lighting equipment provided by the venue is preferred but Imagination Stage is also able to supply a speaker if necessary. Microphones are not required but performers will need a space separate from the audience to secure personal belongings and prepare for the show.

A tech rider listing each productions specific needs is available upon request.

Productions are available for performance in Montgomery and the surrounding counties. Imagination Stage is excited to work in Baltimore and beyond. Weekdays and weekends are available throughout the year. For additional details please contact the Assistant Producer.
