Sumita Kim, an artist and Professor of Art at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, was born in Gwang-ju, South Korea and grew up in Seoul, where she developed an early, deep appreciation for art and language.
After graduating from Sogang University in Seoul, she came to the US to earn a Master’s degree in filmmaking from the American University in Washington, DC, and worked for Voice of America in the Korean Service. Later, Kim decided to pursue fine arts in the MFA painting program at University of Maryland, College Park. For the past twenty years, Kim has experienced immense joy teaching painting and drawing at Montgomery College in Rockville, and has served as the Chair of the Art Department there. In 2011, she was given the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award. An active artist, she has shown her work at the Smithsonian Institution, Mary Washington University, and VisArts in Rockville, Maryland.
