About the Artist

I am a Baltimore-based artist / teaching-artist.  I handcraft contemporary stone sculptures using classic materials, simple tools, and time-honored carving techniques. I mainly utilize marble, alabaster, limestone, and soapstone materials. My work is exhibited regionally (MD, PA, WVA, NY). I accept commisions for custom production. I also teach the traditional craft of stone carving and other 3D arts to students of all ages (private and public schools) at visiting-artist events, after-school classes, and summer camp. Off-site demonstrations of stone carving and workshops are also offered for craft shows and other events. In addition to working with the most basic material -- rock, I also create 3D imagery (holograms) using highly advanced photo-optical technologies in the laser laboratory. Holography can be considered "sculpting with light." A recent exhibition included a sculpture and a holographic image of that sculpture, side-by-side.  Alan Rhody Teaching Artist Stone Carving: Create Contemporary Sculpture using Classic Techniques Lean to carve stone materials using time-honored techniques and tradional tools (hammer, chisels, files, etc).  Make tabletop statues, abstract sculptures, jewelry, pedestal art, and other 3D art items from stone. This is a hands-on class with little academic coursework that does involve physical activity including repetitive motion (hammering, sanding, polishing, etc.). Students are required to wear basic safety equipment (goggles, dust mask, gloves) while workong. Materials are non-toxic, however a well ventilated or outdoor workspace is optimal. Note: Stone carving is a craft that requires patience and dedication, progress is gradual.  However, it is a very engaging activity that results in art that can last a lifetime. Projects will be tailored to age of students and course length.
