Alizah Lathrop

Painting, Sculpture / Installation, Visual / Media

My work is a personal recontextualization of ornamentation and family struggles. The initial year of Covid-19 Quarantine forced me to analyze my surroundings and interests in new ways, and came to realize that decoration symbolized a sort of overwhelming weight or intruding distress that clouds clarity within my personal life. The work reflects upon and experiments with the use of decoration as a false sense of security, something that merely covers up disorder. Additionally, porcelain acts as a substitute for human form to express a teetering between fragility and the recognizable. Areas of dense layering or confused objects are meant to create a sense of discomfort that are contrasted by elements of calm—reflecting a search for peace in the midst of chaos.
