Artist's Statement
My paintings examine the contrasts between the relationship of clothing and bodily adornments and the wearer of said garments. Warped, hyper-realistic depictions of humans are clothed in highly expressive, flat patterns and areas of purely abstract interactions of paint. This harsh juxtaposition of stark representation and graphic, experimental bursts of painting confronts the notion of what defines an individual aesthetically. I begin each painting by painstakingly re-creating the likeness of my subject in a photo-realistic manner. The paintings are then finished in an aggressive, impulsive manner with great attention paid to color and expression. The contrast in these painting processes, both visually and kinetically, illustrates the duration and intensity of attention paid and scrutiny given to each aspect of the subject’s appearance.
