Anya Blakeley

Painting, Visual / Media

I am primarily a painter. I work on large canvases with acrylic and spray paint. I approach the canvas without image in mind. My paintings are guided by the subconscious mind and my connection with the spirit world. I open myself to Spirit and allow the painting to come through me, rarely paint attention to composition.

I work organically, layering paint with various marking tools until images begin to appear. In any one painting, there could be anywhere from five to fifteen layers or two or three complete “worlds” underneath.
I consider my paintings to be doorways into hidden realms. The images are an expression of what I might see with my inner eye or between worlds. I use strong, saturated color and paint abstract, human-animal spirited images.

My paintings invite the viewer to look outside the norm, to what lies beyond the limitations of the mind. My paintings are an attempt to bring awareness that alternate states of consciousness and realities exist. My layering process is symbolic of this. In my paintings, what actually exists still remains unseen by the viewer.

In addition to my paintings, I also use encaustic wax, charcoal, graphite, eco-dyed fabric, embroidery, found objects, natural materials, cardboard in 3-D conceptual works. By creating conceptually, I invite the viewer to think beyond the surface and consider the underlying themes and messages. This approach adds to the complexity, not only encouraging critical engagement but also fosters a humanized approach to the subject matter.

About the Artist

Multidisciplinary artist who has been sharing creative work with the public since 2012.  I am a self-taught visionary artist. Art has allowed me to look beyond an event and experience it from different perspectives while attempting to make sense of them.  My work has given me full expression to explore the shadow parts of my personality and trauma while also embracing the gifts that lie beyond “normal” consciousness. Most recently my engaged  creative practice involves bringing to light the complex social issues surrounding our criminal legal system, incarceration and how we perceive humanity at large.
