April Brown

About the Artist

Born in Pittsburgh and now a resident of Maryland, April Brown, known as the Art Missionary of BLACCARTZ, has been a mixed  medium artist since the year 2000. She has always had a passion for art, but in high school, she discovered her notable medium, acrylic on canvas. Brown, a self taught painter, finds her inspiration from other well known artist, such as Frida Kahlo and Jacob Lawrence, as well as through Black culture in America. When she isn't hosting a paint & sip or painting her next masterpiece, she enjoys spending to with her husband, also an Artist & Photographer, and her two boys,

Artist's Statement

I started painting when I was young and its has come to a place of passion for me. Not only a passion, but a lifestyle and a way to express my thoughts and feelings. I use colorful movement throughout the canvas to inspire generations to embrace ideas not yet disclosed.

This unique piece incorporates the artist's love for tree and braided hair. Looking at the piece upside down, the viewer can see the tree in the fall sun.
This piece was inspired by the love that a mother has when she is pregnant. It is the interpretation of how the mother pictures the son in the womb within her mind.
This piece was inspired by Frida Kahlo's 1940 Self Portrait, Dedicated to Dr Eloesser. Kahlo is Brown's favorite artist. This piece is dedicated to her mother, Pamela Stovall.
"Gucci" was inspired by the luxury brand Gucci's backlash on a particular sweater that had a resemblance of blackface and the reality that the Black community will continue to buy the brand's clothing.
