Artist's Statement
I am a Nigerian-American experimental storyteller whose work focuses on creating physical and metaphysical atmospheres where audience members are asked how it is that they choose to understand the life experience. By creating symbol heavy installation pieces, my objective is to shape what is breathed in, seen, felt and digested by my audience. My practice speaks on the relationship between my bodies, their physical movements in the world and their incorporeal movements as a result of that.
I use self-portraits in my work as retaliation against spaces where my body has not been welcomed. I force my audience to acknowledge my existence and confront their own private thoughts of how it is that they choose to digest this body. I use my own experiences as a way of announcing my existence to the world, where I often feel invisible.
