About the Artist

Growing up, I never thought that “artist” was an occupation, even though I can’t remember a time before paper and crayon—I am nervous whenever I am without an implement to make marks. It’s not really an occupation—it’s a mindset/philosophy that I’ve used to guide my life, from Pensacola Junior College in Florida, to Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA General Fine Arts, ’94), to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MA Arts Administration, ’00) and my career in College Admission. Balancing art making with an art-related job that goes far beyond M-F,  9 to 5 is a challenge, but in any iteration of my schedule, art is always present. Art may seem trivial or inconsequential in these troubling times, but the very act of creative practice is positive and powerful.

Artist's Statement

I tell stories using visual elements, but focus on the the mysterious rather than the literal. I am inspired by literature and film, and the act of capturing movement and space on a flat, static surface. When I draw, I ask a visual question and answer it through the connection of mark on paper leading to a series of additional questions. I use collage to creating new compositions out of existing elements. I aim to get the viewer to stop, look and formulate their own narrative endings.
