Painting, Visual / Media

As an artist, I am greatly influenced by the American Tonalists, a group of artists that included figures such as Ryder, Inness, Blakelock, and their descendants such as Rothko, Diebenkorn, and Kahn. I find their use of the landscape, colors, and tones to create a non-verbal mood particularly inspiring. For me, the art of painting is not just about representing an image or scene but about evoking a particular emotion or atmosphere.

About the Artist

I am currently in the process of rebuilding my career after taking a hiatus from 2000 to 2015 to focus on other pursuits. Before this hiatus, I was an active member of the arts community in the Maryland region, having received an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1987. During the 90s, I was fortunate enough to receive two Maryland State Art grants as well as several Baltimore City arts grants, and my work was exhibited at several selected regional venues during this time. I was born and raised in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York and relocated to this region in 1985. The landscape and environment of the region have greatly influenced my work, as have the American Tonalists who have inspired me to use color and tone in a way that creates a unique and powerful mood in my paintings.

Artist's Statement

One technique I have adopted from these artists is the separation of the painted areas by masking, which interrupts and isolates the view in a way that is similar to looking through a window. The white border surrounding the work is also crucial to the final painting, as it frames the piece and allows a bit of the history of the painted layers to be visible at the edges. This approach adds an additional layer of depth to the artwork, inviting the viewer to consider not just what is being represented but the process and history of the work as well.
