Connect people to the magic and beauty of our natural world through fused glass art.
About the Artist
Carolyn Hill is a Maryland-based fused glass artist who weaves her love of nature and world travel into her unique art pieces. Her artistic nature emerged early in life…from kindergarten onwards she could be found drawing, painting, photographing or doing arts and crafts of some kind. Through the years she has worked with a variety of mediums – starting with yarns and fabrics and moving on to batik after traveling to Asia and seeing masters at work with dyes and hot wax. From fabrics she discovered metals and spent years making silver jewelry fashioned after plants, flowers, shells and other natural wonders. Ms. Hill remains an avid photographer and her works are found throughout homes, businesses and greeting cards across the country. While she enjoys photography, when Carolyn discovered fused glass it was love at first “melt”. Fusing solids into liquids and asking them to flow, provides never-ending possibilities. Her primary source of inspiration comes from nature’s myriad shapes, textures and color palettes. Each piece is made by layer hand-cut glass pieces and kilnforming them through multiple fusings at temperatures ranging up to 1600 degrees. Some of her pieces are 8-9 layers thick, bringing dimensionality to them. And, some pieces are hand-painted with 24kt gold and black metal oxide to create a sense of movement. She has exhibited her work in juried shows including "Alchemy: Sand to Light" at the Washington ArtWorks Gallery in Rockville, Maryland and “Endless Possibilities In Glass” at Maryland Hall of Creative Arts in Annapolis, Maryland. Her glass art is in many private residences throughout the U.S. and Canada. She studies at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Vitrum Studio, and Weisser Glass in Maryland. She is a member of the National Capital Arts Glass Guild.Artist's Statement

Hit the Trail - Fused Glass Sculpture
Glass, Fused Glass, Teak Wood Base
2020
Let's go skipping down this forest trail that is ablaze with summer colors. Hiking in the woods is one of my favorite past-times so I wanted to recreate that experience for you. Each glass layer adds different elements of the forest, whether the trail, the aspen tree trunks, the colorful forest canopy of leaves or the brilliant turquoise sky peaking out from behind the trees. By giving this piece a 3-dimensional effect, my hope was to invite you to go deeper and explore what might be around the next curve of the trail.
This one-of-a-kind sculpture is kiln-formed glass fabricated on an actual log from the forest that has been sanded and varnished. All the color in this piece is from cut and layered glass that has been fired multiple times in a kiln specifically designed for heat work with glass. Multiple panes add texture, detail, and movement.

Honu - Hawaiian Sea Turtle - Fused Glass Sculpture
Glass, Fused Glass with black metal stand
2019
The Hawaiian Honu - symbol of wisdom and good luck.
When snorkeling in Hawaii, you will likely be graced by the presence of the Hawaiian Honu, or Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas). When hypnotized by their sleepy doe-eyes, take note. You are looking back 150 million years in time into the lens of a reptilian survivor from the age of dinosaurs.
The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is the only indigenous reptile found in Hawaii, but for Hawaiians, the Honu is a symbol of good luck in the form of a guardian spirit, or Amakua. The Honu represents the navigator, and the eternal link between man, the land and the sea.
Kiln formed glass is a warm glass working technique. It is the process of taking a glass panel up to the temperature where it becomes soft and malleable. This causes it to slump down and pick up the texture of a mold it is placed over. In this case, I hand carved different elements from "fiber paper" and melted the glass over it to create the images of the turtles, bubbles and sea grasses.
The turquoise sea turtle glass piece is 14" tall x 10" wide. Sitting in the black metal base, the piece measures 17.5" tall and 18" wide.
