Clare A Winslow

About the Artist

A native of Washington, D.C. and third-generation artist, Clare’s training includes a degree in painting, a master’s degree in Teaching, and years of post-graduate study at the Corcoran College of Art. Her focus on printmaking has allowed her to integrate a broad range of artistic interests: drawing, photography, digital imaging, and painting. Clare’s work has been included in group and solo shows in the US and overseas. She is a former Denbo fellow at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and received an Artist and Scholars Grant from the Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland in 2016 and 2019.  Clare’s work is united by the themes of human connection, the decline of nature, and the passage of time. She teaches Printmaking at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, Maryland, and from her studio in Maryland.

Artist's Statement

While I believe an artist doesn’t need to wait for a “lightning bolt” of inspiration to create impactful work, I do draw creative fuel from the natural world, places I have lived, the work of other artists, and my emotional response to current events. Common to much of the work is a playful interest in abstracted anthropomorphic forms which, teetering between frenetic and calm, act as stand-ins for the human experience. To say creating art is mainly about self-expression trivializes its vital importance, both to this artist and to the broader community at this moment. It is true that as an individual, I see art as my way of finding perspective during times of anxiety and disruption. But as a member of the human tribe, I also recognize its power to connect disparate peoples and remind them of their common humanity.
