About the Artist

L.A. Crawford is a multidisciplinary artist currently based out of Baltimore Maryland, who employs painting, printmaking, and sculptural elements within their works. With a background in oil painting, their works range from casting multiples to large scale installations that explore Suburbia, gender roles, modernity and how we construct reality through the lens of architecture. Found objects, construction materials and casts of architectonic forms are assembled together to create an amalgamation of meaning and critic on how contemporary culture adopts its lineage from historical forms of suppression. L.A. Crawford received their B.F.A. from University North Carolina at Greensboro in painting (2017) and M.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art, Mount Royal School of Art interdisciplinary program (19). They have participated in residencies at the Siena Art Institute, in Siena Italy and have recently returned from an internship in Denver Colorado working with the Museum of Outdoor Arts on the immersive art installation, Natura Obscura. In the fall of 2019 Crawford will be participating in th 77Art Fellowship program in Rutland Vermont. Crawford is employed as a teacher’s assistant to the undergrad sculpture department at MICA and as the facilities assistant manager with the Mount Royal department. Artist's Statement

I collect prosaic materials that are ubiquitous to a region I inhabit or that which is intrinsically tied to a certain decade or place. Linoleum tile, textiles, wallpaper, molds and building materials all have resonance in my work that references the underlying historical narrative of culture and how it is subverted and decays over time. By provoking the familiar, my work hovers between the past and present, and the personal to the collective. The overlaying of times coupled with a degenerative quality excavates the tradition of linear notions of temporality. My work responds to regional architecture, diagnosing its singular abasing history to that which can be observed and reflected upon.
