Davita Fennell

About the Artist

Davita Fennell was born in Fort Bragg, NC and raised in Queens, NY. Fennell is experienced in film and digital photography. Her work was accepted into the 50th Annual All Student Show at Boyden Gallery in 2019. She also had work in the 2nd Annual Salon de Refuse in the Hall Walls. Her work focuses on capturing landscapes and close-ups of objects. She is currently attending St. Mary’s College of Maryland to earn her B.A. in Art with minors in Computer Science and Educational Studies.

Artist's Statement

I ensnare curious moments of objects and subjects that I’ve explored with new perspectives and angles to speculate about the context inside and outside the frame of works. Seeking to pause scenes in time, my experimentation with film photography allows me to capture fleeting moments and details that leave the natural eye and memory in seconds. In the digital work, I aim to manipulate color and viewpoints to transform ordinary things into abstract objects. The macro lens enables the separation from more naturalistic photography. Through its use, there’s the ability to break the barrier between audience and artwork by minimizing the physical distance between myself and the subject. Much like Brett Weston’s Dune, Oceano, the What Am I series uses light and shadow to take on various forms. What Am I? #3 has the most dynamic shadowing at the very center of the work, then spirals the eye around the object itself. These subjects choose me to seize them in their “natural” environments and implore me to record their moments in the angles that suit them best.
