My paintings suggest that we are all connected. The space between people or objects is defined by our perception. We are a part of a larger world, derived from particles. The universe likewise is a macrocosm larger than our world. Perception is everything.
About the Artist
Diane Lorio was born in New Jersey, and now lives in Rockville, MD. She graduated from Guilford College with a Bachelor of Art degree in Fine Arts, Greensboro, NC. Her early artistic career as a painter started in Florida with her interest in abstraction. As she expanded her visual vocabulary, she became interested in woman's issues and traditional women’s creative expression. She began reinterpreting this tradition and it naturally lead her to paint patterns. Lorio has shown in museums and art centers across the eastern part of the US as well as Michigan, Texas and California.Artist's Statement
As an artist, I see, examine, imagine, and paint pattern. As humans, through out history, we have put meaning to the mark, as religious, expressive, or decorative. The natural laws of science create patterns in the physical universe. Our daily routines, systems of belief, and work habits create specific patterns. We are immersed in endless pattern. I examine this phenomenon by creating individual images composed of many small parts as they relate to the space around them. My paintings are abstract, using formal concepts that have suggestions of a personal reality. The patterns of our lives are formed by our behaviors. They are festooned by overlaying events that define our individuality. Likewise, I create images using the mark as a metaphor for the patterns of the physical and the metaphysical.Featured Work
