About the Artist

Dirk was born in Trinidad, grew up in NY and has been based in Baltimore since 2002. For the last 30 years he has worked as a visual artist, art teacher, performing artist (puppetry and theater), and a graphic designer. In 2016 Dirk founded String Theory Theater, a puppetry troupe in which he performs with his daughters.

Kiini and Ujuzi are Kiswahili words. Kiini means heart/essence. Ujuzi means knowing/experience. Together, Kiini Ujuzi means knowing from the heart. This artwork is a symbolic representation of the heart as a perceptive faculty of consciousness and also a transmitter of energy.

    This video titled Black Matter Lives is a crankie performance that debuted in February 2021 at the Festival of Miniature Crankies organized by the Western Massachusetts's Puppetry Guild. It was also part of a virtual event in March 2021 called the Spaghetti Dinner, organized by Great Small Works out of Connecticut.

Most of my puppet shows can be performed on a 6 foot table. Electricity to power our mics and a speaker is required.

Other than Covid-19 safety protocols, we have no traveling restrictions.
