About the Artist

Dylan Schuman is a Baltimore-based trumpeter, composer, and improviser. Dylan is an active member of the Baltimore jazz community and has had the honor to performthroughout the Baltimore City area with groups such as Paint and Yell, The New World Outreach Jazz Orchestra, The New Old Fashioneds, Bedlam Brass, The Creative Consortium, Pretty O.P., and Parallel Heights. Dylan is especially honored to have performed with the "Out of Your Head Collective," a series that brought Baltimore improvisers together to perform completely improvised sets at the Windup Space. Dylan was also honored to play with The Station North Jazz Orchestra at the 2016 Towson University Jazz Festival, featuring saxophonist Dennis DiBlasio. Dylan is the director and founder of the L9-piece Screaming Art Large Ensemble. The ensemble has included over 40 Baltimore jazz musicians, improvisers, and composers thus far. The compositions are all Dylan's original pieces, which include elements of swing, improvisation, chamber, spoken word, and rock sounds. The ensemble isinfluenced by the The John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, Michael Formanek's Ensemble Colossus, Tigran Hamasyan, and Kenny Wheeler. The ensemble will be releasing their debut album in Fall of 2018, which will consist of the over hour long suite "The Chronicles Of Aryeh." Dylan received his B.A. in Jazz/Commercial Trumpet Performance from Towson University, where he studied with Dave Ballou, Jim McFalls, and Rene Hernandez. Dylan also had the privilege of working with Ralph Alessi, Tony Malaby, Mary Halvorson, Donny Mccaslin, Ellery Eskelin, Drew Gress, Matt Wilson, lngrid Laubrock, and Dave Llebman through residencies and master classes. He has had the privilege of taking additional lessons with Brent Madsen, Thomas Bithell, Sean Jones, Jonathon Finlayson, Russ Johnson, and Bobby Shew. Dylan is an active educator and has worked with students in a variety of settings, including the Litchfield Jazz Camp, Baltimore Symphony sponsored Orchkids, and local high schools. He currently teaches private lessons at Menchey Music Service Timonium, Music and Arts Ellicott City, and at his home in Baltimore City. Dylan combines classic trumpet technique with modern calisthenics, including exercises from the late Laurie Frink. Dylan continues to be fascinated by the trumpet, improvisation, composition, and all things music. He hopes to bring his new record on tour to areas near you in the fall.
