About the Artist
Emily Schubert is an interdisciplinary artist working mainly in the worlds of puppetry, performance, storytelling, and collage. She hails from the borderlands of Cincinnati, Ohio and Northern Kentucky and has a degree in fiber art from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has participated in puppet theater festivals and workshops in Europe, Indonesia, and the United States, has a passion for plants, and enjoys stilt walking in a good parade! Enthralled by the emotive power and depth of expression achieved through puppetry and storytelling, she believes that within these realms lies a source of real-life magic that is deficient in much of our daily lives.Artist's Statement
We live in an ever-changing uncontrollable reality. At times it is difficult to make sense of all that is happening within and outside of our present selves. I create puppetry based performances to grapple with the philosophical quandaries life presents: How does one cope with anxiety on an individual, communal, and global level? How can moments of collective joy be created through the mundane? I am drawn to tactile materials and methods, shadows, re-purposed and found objects, and the relationships between humans and non-humans that promote interconnection in a society that often forgets it's planetary roots.Featured Work
