About the Artist
Emory Knott was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, and has recently earned her B.A. in the Arts, with a minor in English, at St Mary’s College of Maryland. Although she likes to experiment with any type of medium, she prefers printmaking using linoleum relief and intaglio to create her pieces. She travels yearly to both Bethany Beach in Delaware and an old hunting lodge on a lake in Maine, which is reflected in her architecture work. Her fascination with animals and flying is also shown in her series In the Sky, which is a collection of animals with wings flying. She has had several of her architecture pieces selected for shows, Castle in the Clouds, a relief piece, being sent to High Point University in North Carolina to be in the Sechrest Gallery’s show, New Impressions: A Showcase of Contemporary Printmaking, and Tree House, an intaglio, being in the 50thAnnual Student Art Exhibition at St Mary’s College of Maryland’s Boyden Gallery.Artist's Statement
Architecture and creatures have inspired me to explore the fantasy worlds in my subconscious, investigating both the western standards of fantasy and the romanticizing of nobility. The architecture is sturdy and long lasting, as they come from the more permanent thoughts and influences of my life, whereas the animals are heavy, but they come and go just like thoughts. My father’s occupation in the construction industry has shaped the architecture in the fantasy worlds, creating structures from Romanesque, Gothic, and Grecian times. Combined with the illustrative bold black shapes surrounded by twisting and contorting lines, the work looks very Gothic. The series are explored through the printmaking mediums of linoleum relief and intaglio, as intaglio allows me to explore forms of creatures, while I am able to create rigid structures in my relief works. Printmaking results in more than one piece of the work, which fits the content of my work, as species consist of more than a singular animal and architecture from a time period is similar and often replicates itself in different locations.Featured Work
