My practice is rooted in values of generosity, connection, kindness, and curiosity; I believe in bringing people together through unexpected, joyful connections as a powerful avenue for social change. One aspect of my art that helps to push this mission is scale: with each piece as large and complex as I can imagine, I am forced to bring together collaborators to carry some of the weight, be it physical, creative or emotional. One of the side effects of building large art is that it eventually explodes out of the privacy of the workspace. Coming into public view while still in creation sparks interactions that help shape the final outcome of the piece. All these interactions become the work from its beginnings in collaboration with other artists working together to weave a story, through audience engagement and interaction with the art.
About the Artist
Formstone Castle is a small team based out of Upper Fells Point, Baltimore, bringing together the enthusiasm and diverse skillsets of many different communities to make art for festivals and events, as well as simply for the joy of creation. The projects are typically envisioned and produced by lead artist Michael Bowman, and made real through the efforts of numerous volunteers and collaborative artists, who bring a wealth of professional and amateur visual art, music, technology, graphic design, fabrication, and building skills and experience of all kinds to our projects, which evolve through the collective vision of everyone involved.Formstone Castle website Formstone Castle Formstone Castle website Cicada Parade-a
