About the Artist
The Puerto Rican classical guitarist graduated from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, where he earned a Master of Music (M.M.) in Classical Guitar Performance under the tutelage of Iván Rijos, also took master classes with Manuel Barrueco as an artist in residence, and a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Classical Guitar Performance under the tutelage of Leonardo Egúrbida, a disciple of Regino Sainz de la Maza and Alirio Diaz. He has had the honor of studying and participating in master classes under prestigious artists such, as Leonardo Egúrbida, Iván Rijos, Dr. José A. López, Orlando Laureano, Eduardo Fernández, René Izquierdo, Elina Chekan and Manuel Barrueco, amongst others. Rodriguez was the 1st prize winner of the National Classical Guitar Competition 2009 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, and subsequently served as deputy director of the competition. He has performed in Puerto Rico, the United States, and Spain. Gabriel Rodriguez has served on the faculty of Puerto Rico Baptist College where he conducted the choir and taught Classical Guitar, Music Theory, Ear Training, Introduction to Conducting, Foundations of Teaching Music, and Music Appreciation. Rodriguez currently lives in Maryland and teaches classical guitar at the Guitars for Change program, an after-school program that targets young immigrants at risk of gang activity in Annapolis, MD area.
