About the Artist

Handirubvi is a  Zimbabwean-American artist currently based in Maryland. She explores notions of belonging and identity to depict a series of visual narratives that have shaped her culturally.   Her process involves the investigation of people using the experiences of others as well as her own to create images that are relatable and inclusive where people are able to see themselves and others in a positive light.   In 2014, Wakatama founded 54plusfineart, a collection that merges arts education, pop culture and her African heritage. Her mission as an arts educator is to create culturally relevant art lessons and curriculums for schools. She enjoys creating art and making art therapy accessible to all people.   Wakatama earned a BFA in Fine Art from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and holds a Masters in Arts in Teaching from George Washington University.
