About the Artist
Harold Burgess, a native of Columbia, Maryland, has worked as a freelance professional lighting designer in the Washington and Baltimore metro area which include productions for Round House Theatre, Studio Theatre, Theatre J, Imagination Stage, Adventure Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Rep Stage and Everyman Theatre among others. Recent productions include Murder on the Orient Express, Radio Golf, Dinner With Friends and Sweat at Everyman, A Dolls House Part Two for Round House Theatre, A Doll's House Part Two at Northern Stage (VT), Big River at Adventure Theatre and Trayf at Theatre J. Burgess has designed productions for for Georgetown University, George Washington and American University and the University of Maryland College Park where he earned his Bachelors of Art and Master of Fine Art in theatrical design. He is in his 11th year as director of the College Park Scholars Arts program at the University of Maryland.

Artist's Statement
I see lighting design as a measured balance of being proactive and reactive. You need to understand the story being told within the script in concert with the concept the director/design team has devised yet repeatedly tap your imagination to create new ideas in response to ongoing changes while in rehearsals on stage. Lighting for the stage is similar to being behind a camera in that you get to choose what to illuminate, how much light you need for a proper exposure and what things you don’t want in your composition to ensure the subject is undeniably captured in focus.
