About the Artist
Jeff Huntington aka Jahru (@jahru) is a studio painter and street artist living and working in Annapolis, Maryland. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA 1997) and the Corcoran School of Art (BFA 1995). Huntington taught painting as an adjunct professor at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design/ George Washington University from 2012 until 2016. At this time, he and his wife and fellow artist, Julia Gibb, founded the nonprofit arts program, Future History Now (FHN), whereby they create collaborative murals with youth in under-resourced communities throughout the world. Jahru and FHN murals can be seen in Panama, Brazil, Colombia, France, Philippines, India, Hawaii, and throughout the continental United States. His studio work is represented by Porter Advisory in New York City and Reyes+Davis in Washington D.C.Featured Work

An initial portrait was spray painted entirely in black & white. Then I masked off every other slat of the siding with tape and spray painted the same image in color and offset. Peeled the tape, revealing portions of both paintings, incorporating the character of the vinyl siding.

Using a spider boom lift for accessibility, the portrait was painted with bucket paint and brushes. The triangles were spray painted using a 16x16- inch triangle stencil cut from cardboard. The birds and skyline were spray painted by freehand.

Each pattern element divisible by a 24x24-inch triangle stencil cut from cardboard, and using 4 shades of grey, the overall pattern was painted one triangle at a time, left to right, bottom to top, revealing an implied grid into which the faces were proportionately compartmentalized and rendered.

Using a scissor lift, this painting was made with spray paint, copied from a double offset digital rendering of a buddha, the two layers of portraits separated by a lotus pattern. No stencil was used in the painting process, but painted one lotus-shaped quadrant at a time.

The first phase of this painting is a b+w portrait made with latex paint and rollers. The second phase consists of a stencil of horizontal stripes made with seven rolls of 2-inch painters tape. The third phase is the same portrait in color, offset, made with spray paint.
