About the Artist

Janet Huddie is a silversmith and jewelry artist working in Annapolis, Maryland. Descended from generations of Scottish engineers who built ships and bridges, she combines an inherited talent for three-dimensional design and metal fabrication with a passion for architectural detail, applied ornament and pattern. She likes to believe that she's continuing her family's tradition of metalwork, just on a much smaller scale. Janet was the recipient of a 2007 Maryland State Arts Council Award, for Craft, a 2015 Gemmy Award and a 2017 Creative Crafts Council Award. She is a three time Saul Bell Design Award finalist and received the Grand Award for Metalwork in the 2018 International Metals Artistry Competition. She is a member of the Washington Guild of Goldsmiths and exhibits nationally. Her work has been featured in various journals, magazines and books.

Artist's Statement

My jewelry is an exploration of ornament and structure inspired by the exuberant, stylized decoration of Gothic architecture, illuminated manuscripts and 19th century engineering. By combining these forms and patterns, with my love of symmetry and tessellation, I re-interpret grand, structural elements and decorative details into wearable jewelry. My one-of-a-kind narrative pieces are three dimensional illustrations; illustration was my first love at art school. These pieces are inspired by personal stories and the minutiae of domestic life.
