About the Artist

Janet Seifert, artist bio         Janet is an abstract artist creating luminous, intuitive paintings and drawings that express novel ways of perceiving and interpreting the unexpected beauty transcending everyday life.      A native of Baltimore, Janet studied studio art and art history at the University of Maryland, College Park on a full scholarship awarded by the Maryland State Legislature. After a long career on the west coast as a graphic designer and naming consultant, she returned to her home state and to the creative work she loves most - improvisational painting and drawing.   While living in San Francisco, Janet exhibited her art in a variety of venues in the Bay Area and beyond. She was represented by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery at the Fort Mason Center and McKinley Art Solutions art consultants. Now residing in her home state of Maryland, with an artist studio in downtown Frederick, Janet exhibits regionally and is an artist partner with Art in Embassies, a U.S. Department of State program supporting cultural diplomacy through the visual arts. Her paintings and drawings are found in collections throughout the U.S. and in the United Kingdom.

Artist's Statement

Abstract Improvisation/Janet Seifert          With a love of unexpected beauty that transcends everyday life, my abstract paintings explore novel ways of perceiving and interpreting this imagery in a contemporary form.            In the spirit of experimental discovery, I practice the technique of abstract improvisation, a contemplative approach to painterly expression born of abstract expressionism.          Using gestural brushwork with the fluid elegance of liquid highly pigmented acrylic paint, the process becomes a visual meditation colored with insights and notions of the moment. To capture the spontaneity and freshness, compositions are painted in one extended session. The process is alchemy of a certain sort, working with intuition and materials in a way that have no predictable outcome. For me, it is a journey into the mysteries of creativity.         As my art evolves, I continue search for a deeper understanding of the visual language of abstraction, including how one’s imagination and sense of wonder are activated by abstract elements coalescing into coherent compositions that are meaningful to both the viewer and artist.
