JOHN MACARTHUR

Painting, Visual / Media

Art is unique. Look at what I create. Understand, you are seeing a part of me. Naked. Just as I am. That is art. Artist’s do not hide when sharing. They sit next to you on the bus. They stand behind you in the market. You do not see them. Stand before their work. Then, then you see them. Color is a language all its own. I use it to communicate. My goal is to reach inside the viewer and touch their heart. I only have so much time. There is so much to share. Your world, my color. I only ask that you slow down and see what I see.

About the Artist

John MacArthur was born in Washington, DC in 1946. Having grown up the son of a writer and an artist in our Nation’s Capital, he was exposed to museums and the work of masters from the time he could walk. Plein Aire painting became a daily activity. John has always been fascinated by color and how the world is comprised of shapes, values and hues. He created his first pigments with water and poke berry juice. After meeting Vincent VanGogh (Kirk Douglas, but at 10, he was convinced it was Vincent), he began using acrylics. Ms. Davila, his high school art teacher encouraged him to follow the muse. It has been a lifelong journey. After leaving the USMC, John went to New Orleans and pursued the artist’s life. Jackson Square became his university and fellow artists became his professors. Time spent learning to create and live created a foundation for his career. He had no formal education but proudly wore the title “Naif Artist”. He paints cityscapes to landscapes. His color choices are an emotional reaction to how he sees the world.  The work is a collaboration between the artist and the world around him. John prefers plein aire painting and has a fondness for Paris. In a world that is overloaded with information input, he feels that capturing the beauty will afford others the time to slow down and appreciate this mortal coil.
