About the Artist

John Sharp lives on the Eastern Shore.  He strives to depict, through his art, the culture of a life working on the water as well as the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and Tidewater Region.  With a lifetime of experiences, that include a career in education, and countless hours on the bay as a commercial waterman, charter boat captain, and recreational sailor, he has accumulated nearly a half-century of memories, observations, and experiences.  With this background, he has had the rare opportunity to not only live, but also appreciate a way of life that may soon disappear forever.

Anyone who has run a trotline commercially knows that the day begins long before the sun comes up. Everything should be in place and the day's work started by the time the sun comes up. This piece depicts an an imaginary but very typical scene. The waterman has laid his lines out and totally engrossed in his work as the sun comes up.
