My artwork incorporates imagery that is reminiscent of childhood, with poetic visual language to convey the organic conversations that occur within my physical and mental selves. Through a mix of different media, I explore storytelling using vibrant color palettes and textual forms that dance and sit in a harmonious state of peace and moments of chaos. The bold hues and forms I use create figures and landscapes that stream from the reflective atmosphere of the artwork.
I believe in the power of spirituality and the playfulness of the self. Alma Thomas's quote, "Through color, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man's inhumanity to man," has had a significant impact on me. I am interested in the self-reflection between my mind and my observation as a human within our society. With nearly a decade of experience in my career, I have developed my practice into creating myself as an instrument. My art inspires and encourages viewers to contemplate the ideas within themselves and learn about who and what we are as a collective and as individuals, embracing our similarities and differences.
My work to date reflects my growth as a human and as an artist. They are pieces that often collage my thoughts, struggles, and breakthroughs as a young black artist living and understanding his place in the world. With the help of this award, I aim to continue to evolve as an artist. I will be attending the Maryland Institute of Art in the fall of this year. I'll end with a quote by James Baldwin that speaks to my experience and philosophy of my practice: "...You have to decide who you are and force the world to deal with you, not with its idea of you."
