About the Artist
Kathleen Wheaton was born in Germany and grew up in Pasadena and Pola Alto, California. She graduated from Stanford University in 1979 and later recieved an MFA from Boston University. She began publishing short stories- in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine and Sequoia- and then moved to New York, where she worked in the library of the New Yorker. In 1986 she moved to Madrid to write and edit a guidebook to Spain for the publishers of Insight Guide. She then was sent to write on Buenos Aires, Argentina, wher she met NPR Reporter David Welna, whom she later married. For the next ten years, she worked as a freelance journalist and magazine writer, libing in Bueonos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Tepoztlan, Mexico. Upon returning to the US she worked as a Spanish and Portuguese interpreter and became a regular contributor to Bethesda Magazine, recieving four Society of Professional Journalists awards for feature writing. She also returned to writing fiction. Her stories have appeared in many journals, most recently the New England Review, Narrative, New South, and the Potomac Review, as well as two anthologies. In 2013, her collection, Aliens and Other Stories, won the Washington Writers Publishing House fiction prize. Wheaton now serves as president and managing editor of Washington Writers, a nonprofit cooperative press. She and her husband live in Bethesda, Maryland and have two grown sons. She is at work on a novel about the "dirty war" in Argentina of the late 1970s.
