About the Artist
I have been an artist most of my life. I aquired a degree in Graphic Art/ Advertising Design in 1992, and have found through my experiences, and experimentations, that the fine arts are what speak to me, so I have been painting ever since. Most of my work stems from a "stream of consciousness" approach, where there is no pre-concieved image, I just allow the lines, shapes, colors and patterns to reveal themselves, from an intuitive platform. I am an abstract painter, and use acrylics for my medium. I am still discovering who I am, as an artist, yet I am intent on learning exploring, and sharing what I find on my journey.
Artist's Statement
I am interested in using my paintings to explore, communicate, engage, ignite, and unite – examining everything from my experiences with access to healthcare, ( lack thereof) as a breast cancer patient, someone who has dealt with the stigma of mental health dichotomies, female identity, and the dehumanization that occurs while trying to navigate the labyrinth that has so many of us trapped-- in our “selves” that has been defined for us, we’re only as good as our bodies; what “ wellness” is, and what it means to truly be your ”self”, and how that is “sold” to all of us. I plan on a series that would bring the viewer to experience these things through art- by doing so, I hope to bring a point of view that will meet the goals I have listed above. I envision a series of work that envelops and startles, to promote introspection through a “world” that one finds oneself in--no answers, no escape, but a way through…
There are many aspects to what I channel into my paintings, all which stem from some desire to use art as a vehicle for healing, to put it simply- not just for myself, but for the viewer. Art has a way of forming a relationship, that doesn’t require any physical contact, speech, or reciprocation from the viewer, yet it is extremely intimate, and personal-feelings become visual language, and it is universal. That has always fascinated me.
I have always been an intuitive painter. I don’t begin with a pre-conceived idea of what may appear onto the canvas, because I prefer to follow brush strokes that develop into a rhythm of spontaneous shapes and colors, values and textures, uncovering a mystery that explores how the human experience can be interpreted in this manner. This mystery of the unconscious work takes form and I try to allow the paintings to happen as if on a journey with no map, revealing terrain that is emotional physical, and spiritual. My main inspiration is music, and it aids as a transportation device, to allow my paintings to unfold, conjuring memories, and feelings. Many of my experiences seem to have a soundtrack, and it seems fitting for me to have one as I paint, a catalyst for creating on the canvas.
