About the Artist
L'abri Trio, a unique collaboration of saxophone, cello, and piano was formed in 2012 by professional musicians from Baltimore,Maryland. Recent performances include the Strathmore mansion, Peabody Conservatory, International Saxophone Symposium in Shenandoah University, and venues in Seoul, South Korea. L’abri Trio’s classically trained musicians have been acknowledged for their unique and exquisite musicality across a wide variety of genres, including Western and Korean works.
Kenny Kyungwon Baik, saxophonist, has been gaining recognition for his “beautiful tone and natural sound,” and “flexibility with unfailing musicality.” His performances include solo, chamber, and orchestra at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, Griswold Hall, Shriver Hall, the Strathmore Mansion, Seoul Arts Center, and Seoul Yamaha Artists Concert. Other recent performances include those with the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra (Gershwin, Bernstein), Peabody Orchestra (Mussorgsky), and 229th Maryland Army National Guard Band (Holst, Sousa). He earned his Masters of Music in saxophone from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied saxophone with Gary Louie and is currently working towards a Graduate Performance Diploma while serving as a graduate assistant in Musicology. He earned his Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Georgia.
As a member of the Marine Corps Band in Quantico, Virginia (2004-2007) Baik performed more than 150 concerts per year, presenting classical, jazz, and Dixieland repertoire for diverse audiences. Major performances include the 2007 Super Bowl, Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington D.C, Columbus Day Parade in New York City, and “Hail to the Chief” performed for President George W. Bush.
Baik’s upcoming projects include solo recitals, chamber recitals, and commissioned new pieces for saxophone and chamber music. His contributions to 21st century repertoire include L’abri Trio’s commissioned pieces by Seul-Ki Kim and Jeong Hyun Chung, premiered at the Peabody Conservatory and 37th International Saxophone Symposium.
Baik has studied saxophone with Sgt. 1st class Doug Earlenbaugh, Dr. Kenneth Fischer, Dr. Stephen Fischer, Dr. Joseph Wytko, Dr. Connie Frigo, and currently with Professor Gary Louie. He has also joined masterclasses with Claude Delangle, Dr. Eugene Rosseau, and Dr. Jonathan Helton.
Young Eun Lee, born in Korea, is an avid cellist who embraces a wide range of repertoire and styles from Bach to 20th century music. She has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and Seoul Symphonic Ensemble, and as a chamber musician at the Mozart Music Festival, the Great Mountain Festival, and the Seoul meets Manheim Festival, among numerous other events.
Ms. Lee has performed internationally at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Seoul Arts Center, Shriver Hall, Wiener Saal, Mozart Hall, Youngsan Art Hall, Opus Hall, and the Seoul National University Concert Hall. She was invited to perform at the Washington, D.C. embassies of the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Singapore. She has worked with eminent cellists including Steven Isserlis, Laurence Lesser, Suren Bagratuni, Claudio Bohorquetz, Umberto Clerici, Marion Feldman, David Garett, Marc Johnson, Dmitri Kouzov, Alison Wells, and Michael Kannen, and has been mentored in chamber music by members of the Peabody Trio, Ying Quartet, Jupiter Quartet, and St Lawrence Quartet.
In addition to a deep, versatile music education, Ms. Lee’s passion for music grew significantly while studying at the Yewon Art School and Seoul Arts High School. She received her bachelor's degree in cello performance from the Seoul National University (2008) and moved to the United States that year to study at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University with world-renowned cellist Amit Peled, where she received her master’s degree as a scholarship recipient and in 2015 her Doctor of Musical Arts degree. During her growth as a musician, Ms. Lee was guided by Amit Peled, Young Sook Yoon, and Sung Eun Hong.
Ju Young Lee performs actively as solo pianist and collaborative artist. She was the gold medalist of the New Praise Support Society (2007), winner of the Music Teachers National Association competition (2009), and the Young Artist Competition of West Virginia University (2011). She was also awarded by the Pittsburgh Concert Society (2011) and praised as being “deeply in touch with the inner drama of music and having the technique to realize her artistic intent.” Lee has performed in Italy, Mexico, and South Korea. In 2013, she was a finalist in the Liszt Garrison Competition as a Collaborative Artist and received the Best Interpretation Award for American songs. She served as assistant coach for Hansel and Gretel, Cendrillon, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail, productions of the Peabody Opera Department. Lee has joined masterclasses with renowned artists such as Marilyn Horne, Denyce Graves, and Margo Garrett. She completed a Master of Music degree in vocal accompanying at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Eileen Cornett. Currently, she is pursuing a Graduate Performance Diploma with a full scholarship as a Graduate Assistant in the Peabody Opera Department.
