Lillian Klein (Abensohn)

Literary, Painting, Poetry, Prose, Visual / Media

I wish to paint with all the textual detail and realism of the Dutch Masters, but in a modern idiom, choosing subjects and compositions that reflect contemporary--and eternal-- interests and concerns.

About the Artist

During my career as Professor of English Literature, I also followed my passion for drawing and painting.   I took lessons where I lived and finally settled in Bethesda, MD.  Retired from teaching in late 90's and dedicated myself entirely to painting, studying with various teachers and at the Compass Atelier program.  Have been gallery represented, had exhibits and sold widely.

Artist's Statement

My paintings find harmony and beauty in areas of conflict. The still life compositions with fruit allegorize a basic human condition: relationships--sexual and/or social--and the various ways these relationships are expressed.    The crystal and fruit compositions comment on the tension between the color and density of the fruit vis a vis the transparency and hardness of the crystal.  Each portrait seeks to express the conflict and harmony experienced in the life it reflects.  Even the flowers implicitly (sometimes explicitly) suggest life and death: beauty and harmony for the moment--as in human lives.
