About the Artist
L. M. Smith played in rock bands and recorded her original songs at home for about 20 years before returning to college to take up painting once again in 2003. In 2008 she earned an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Since then she has begun to show her work in the Baltimore/Washington region.Artist's Statement
All the work shown is 12x16 inches and either on paper or board. Four of the five works on paper were made this year and consist of patterns derived from cardboard packing material. Printing ink was rolled onto the raised patterns to create a structure for painting in oil. Each pattern allows for various ways to create a maze or network of positive and negative areas. The painting of the house silhouette framed by a red sky began with simple wood shape found in an arts and crafts store. What kind of emotion might be conveyed using a traced element and minimal use of color? I am currently using other prefabricated shapes to explore this idea further.Featured Work
