LISA PARKER HYATT

About the Artist

Lisa Parker Hyatt has been painting for over 30 years and has shown throughout the East Coast, from New York to Florida, and most recently in Canada. Her paintings have been in nearly 20 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums, and over 50 group shows, juried by such individuals as critic Clement Greenberg and Whitney Museum of American Art Director Thomas N. Armstrong. A key artist in the resurgence of Miami art in the late 1980s, Hyatt’s paintings were included in the traveling museum show The Art of Miami (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art), as well as in a solo show at the Museum of Art, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Her work has also been central to a number of catalog publications, and was a part of the groundbreaking Roadworks public art billboard project, which was included in dozens of reviews as well as a PBS documentary film. Hyatt’s work is in numerous public collections, such as those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL, and the Museum of Art, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and her art is represented in the archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC. Lisa Parker Hyatt has a MFA from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, and a BA from the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL. Hyatt currently lives and works in Washington, DC, and is represented by Beaux-arts des Amériques (Fine Art of the Americas), Montréal, Quebec.

Artist's Statement

My work speaks to the fleetingness of life and the permanency of experience. I am fascinated by how space is both fluid and tangible. Shifts in color and light, objects floating from one opening to another—such aspects of my work suggests peripheral or lateral sensations, as if things are happening just outside our field of vision. In my images, alternate realities counter stasis, where airplanes fly in rooms and clouds appear. These unexpected elements inject emotion into the geometry of my imaginary spaces. The resulting images are elegiac reflections on the life we are living. They are about the here and the not here, the invisible within the everyday, about seeking out a comfort that will always elude.
