MARK BECKER

Artist's Statement

The art I make is almost always on found or reclaimed wood. I paint in oils on these objects after carefully preparing them, turning them in to objects as opposed to two dimensional surfaces. The narratives that are constructed deal with both personal and sociopolitical commentary. I use toys and other found imagery to play the parts of actors in these narratives, trying to avoid images that are recognizable and iconic. Each painting has its own narrative, meaning, setting, time and place. The burden of encryption lies with the viewer’s own psyche and life experiences.
